About perfection
Story from “My Road to Myself”
I once had a dream in which a beautiful white horse ran among flowering trees.
His long mane, blown by the wind, was dyed in all the colors of the rainbow...
Of course, when I woke up in the morning, I wanted to recreate it on canvas. I wasn't looking for perfection, I just wanted to convey the beauty of that vision.
I painted all day. By evening I was satisfied with the result.
And the next morning, I looked at the work with a “fresh eye” and saw that there were too many pink shades in the painting and started to correct it: first I added lilac, then blue…
The next morning, it seemed to me that I had overdone it with the lilacs… and I began to work again to a sense of perfection and harmony that seemed to recede with each stroke, like the horizon line. And I saw in this a trap for our minds.
You can always do better. But is it worth it?
It is very important to stop in time. Because perfection has no limits. Now I often ask myself: will anyone else, besides me, notice the “changes for the better” that I want to make? If the answer is no, I stop and move on. Because sometimes during the corrections you can draw another picture. And that is more interesting.
